What you've built across this pathway

The through-line of this pathway is a single principle stated plainly in Module 01: every line in production is yours, regardless of who wrote it first. Everything else — the prompting patterns, the review discipline, the debugging techniques, the communication habits — serves that ownership standard.

The developer who completes this pathway uses AI differently from one who's just experimenting with it. They're faster. They're also more rigorous, because they understand exactly where AI is unreliable and where their judgment is the only check between a plausible-but-wrong AI output and a production defect in an insurance system.

Module 01 — Speed with ownership

AI compresses boilerplate, scaffolding, and pattern work. The time recovered goes to design quality and complex reasoning — not more AI generation. Ownership of output is non-negotiable regardless of authorship.

AI has predictable failure patterns: invented API methods, boundary errors, null handling gaps, security underweighting. Review is systematic — checklist-driven, not confidence-driven. "Can I explain every line" is the gate.

Scaffolding in minutes

Service class skeleton, DTOs, repository stubs, unit test file structure — describe the context and requirements to AI, get a first draft, review against your actual API documentation. Story points don't change; time to first working code does.

Before submitting code review

AI self-review as first pass

Paste the AI-generated code back to AI with a specific review prompt. Catches some surface issues fast. Then your systematic checklist: API methods, boundary conditions, null handling, logging, hardcoded values. Both steps, every time.

When a bug report arrives

Log analysis before manual reading

Paste the relevant log section with system context — what changed recently, what the failure pattern is. AI surfaces the most likely hypothesis in minutes. Verify the hypothesis before implementing the fix. Never skip the verification step.

During an incident

Structured communication under pressure

Bullet your technical understanding, specify your two audiences, AI drafts the communication. Verify every claim — especially any data safety statement — before sending. The accuracy review takes 5 minutes and prevents far larger problems.

After a design decision

DDR in 10 minutes

Bullet your decision notes — what was chosen, what was rejected, why, what it constrains. AI structures the DDR. You add the context only you have — regulatory constraints, business rationale, what would need to change if requirements shift. Done in 10 minutes, useful for years.

When you're stuck

Debugging conversation, not solo search

Describe the system, the failure, what you've ruled out. Iterate. Share what each investigation found. Reset if the hypothesis doesn't fit after 60-90 minutes — don't invest sunk cost in a wrong theory. Fresh context to AI is faster than prolonged bad-path investigation.

Positioning your AI capability — the developer rate conversation

Insurance IT has a well-established developer rate structure. Guidewire-specific experience commands a premium. Senior developers with a track record command a further premium. What's emerging now is a third dimension: developers who combine domain expertise with genuine, demonstrated AI-augmented practice — and who can describe that capability specifically enough that a client or account manager understands what it means for delivery quality and speed.

The developer market in insurance IT is moving. Guidewire and integration experience still commands a premium — that doesn't change. What's changing is the baseline expectation of what a senior developer produces per sprint, how fast they diagnose production issues, and how clearly they communicate about their work. Developers who integrate AI well into their practice raise all three.

What this pathway builds isn't a new toolset — it's a professional standard for how to use tools that are already available. The review discipline, the debugging conversation pattern, the documentation habit — these compound over time. The developer who applies them consistently over two or three engagements builds a track record that is distinctly different from one who uses AI casually and ships variable-quality output.

There are two kinds of AI-using developers emerging in the market. One produces more output faster and lets the increased volume mask the decreased rigour. The other produces more output faster and maintains the same professional ownership standard — catching what AI misses, communicating clearly, building systems that other developers can understand and maintain.
